Modern saltwater aquariums, also known as marine aquaria are
not as popular as their freshwater counterparts because they are
more costly to set up and maintain. They creatures who inhabit
saltwater are also more expensive and not as easy to obtain. Marine
aquaria are often classified by their contents. Fish only (FO),
fish only with live rock (FOWLR) and reef are specific types of
aquaria.
Primitive saltwater aquariums were used by the Romans about 2000
years ago to hold sea anemones. They were the first known aquarists.
Carp-like fish called barbells were the first fish to be domesticated.
They were often kept in beneath beds in guest rooms. Around 50
A.D. they began using glass on one side of their aquaria.
Home saltwater aquariums did not become fashionable until the
1950s. Although some algae and growths are good for a fish tank,
most aquarists try to keep their tanks as clean and clear as possible.
For those who don’t care about the cleanliness of their
tank as much, there are brackish water fish tanks. Brackish aquaria
are often more unkempt, feature fluctuating levels of water salinity
and animals that live in such waters.
