Reef aquariums may not provide the instant gratification of
a standard fish aquarium, but once they are established they are
just as easy to maintain. Coral are very delicate creatures and
they require specific temperature and chemical levels in their
water. Many believe that fish only tanks are easier to maintain
because fish are less sensitive to pollution and other water changes.
Anyone who has had a reef tank or been around them often will
tell you that they are more beautiful and rewarding.
It’s true that some coral and the reef aquariums they inhabit
are very difficult to maintain. They require a lot of natural
light and very specific water conditions. However, there are a
large variety of inverts that are easy to keep up. Most reef aquarium
owners don’t run into problems until they try to add too
many fish to the tank. The wrong type of fish in certain tanks
will devastate the coral.
Beginning aquarists are usually better off when they start with
a freshwater aquarium. Reef Aquariums and other types of saltwater
tanks are more pricy and labor intensive. No matter what type
of fish tank a novice chooses it’s a good idea to start
small. Large deep tanks are impressive and they provide a more
natural-looking environment but they require a lot more equipment
and care.
