Freshwater aquariums have been around for centuries and continue
to evolve and improve. The first ever aquariums were nothing more
than marble tubs filled with water and carp-like fish. Other early
fish tanks were made from porcelain and resembled modern fish
bowls. Around 50 A.D. the Romans began using glass on one side
of their aquaria.
Thousands of years later glass is still the most common material
used to build freshwater aquariums. Acrylic is gaining in popularity
because it does not break as easily as glass. It is softer so
it’s more susceptible to scratching. Manufacturers can solve
this problem by adding a scratch-resistant outer layer to acrylic
tanks.
Choosing between freshwater aquariums usually starts with picking
a size. Most people want the largest tank they can afford, which
is great fun but not always the best idea. A large aquarium in
a small space can be distracting and most likely it will look
silly. Larger aquaria are easier to maintain in some ways but
they are more expensive to keep up.
