Typical aquarium lighting consists of one or more fluorescent
tubes on top of the tank. Lights are often built into the aquarium
hood and will last quite a long time. Larger aquaria and those
containing species such as coral require more lighting. Natural
light is great for almost all plants and animals but it is usually
difficult to get much to an aquarium.
Different types of aquarium lighting include:
• Halides – Powerful lights most commonly used as
spotlights particularly in reef aquariums.
• Fluorescent – The easiest, most common way to light
a tank. Fluorescent lights are available in several colors.
• Tungsten and Halogen – Not recommended for fish
tanks these lights run hot and do not provide the proper spectrum
of light for aquaria.
Other types of aquarium lighting are designed to enhance fish
tanks in other ways. There are color-enhancing lights which will
bring out the colors of fish and other life. They are usually
yellow or pink in hue and complement a full range of colors. Full-spectrum
lights are made to simulate sunlight. They are especially useful
in tanks containing a lot of plant-life.
