Aquarium hoods or canopies are an important piece of any fish
tank setup. They serve several purposes that many people may overlook.
First of all, they keep fish and other aquatic animals from jumping
or climbing out of the tank.
They also work to keep other things inside the tank. Aquarium
hoods significantly reduce heat loss and water loss due to evaporation.
Perhaps more importantly, hoods keep unwanted debris and pollutants
out of the water. Aquarium lids also reduce the amount that humans
will stick their hands in the water, frightening fish and leaving
behind harmful dirt and oils.
Even more dangerous than humans are other pets. Depending on
the set up and the animal, it may be possible for a dog or cat
to try to get into the tank. Most aquarium hoods are designed
to have lighting either built in or placed on top. They will also
feature holes for heaters, pumps, filters or other necessary equipment.
