Aquarium fish

Most aquarium fish are chosen haphazardly based on first sight. This is a fine approach for anyone who is into flushing fish and money down the toilet. For everyone else, there are several qualities to look for when browsing fish. Before you dive into fish buying it’s a good practice to study their behavior and appearance.

Physical features to inspect when selecting aquarium fish:
• Eyes – Make sure they are bright clear and symmetrical. They should not be sunken into the sockets
• Fins – Be sure the edges are not ragged or frayed. The fish should extend its fins completely from time to time.
• Mouth – The most important thing to look for is that there is no sign of injury which prevents the fish from eating comfortably.

When choosing aquarium fish, study the way they behave on their own and around other fish. If possible visit many stores with similar fish and see how they compare. If you have your eye on a particular fish you may want to check on it over a period of time before you buy it. It is also very important to check to make sure that species will be able to live together in the same tank.
